Especially when it is emotive, or we feel strongly about a particular aspect. This can lead to poor management of time and bloated debates.

There is nothing worse than going into a performance review or 121 with someone, when you know it is likely to be negative, littered with conflict and defensive. From this point it is easy for things to quickly become an argumentative and blame throwing exercise.

A facilitator will help to control the structure of a meeting, seek to involve all parties and ensure focused discussion. They are not givers of advice and will often take little part in any discussion.

A coach will look to understand a situation more deeply to prompt questions. The process will move through questions to a point of action and ownership. They will draw from greater experience in either the industry or situation specialism. Their goal is to grow individual's capability.
